In Sub-Saharan Africa”

The World Bank Institute and World
Bank, FAO, RAID (Regional Irrigation and Drainage Association), 2iE (International
Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering) jointly organize the above
international workshop.
Objectives : Increase the awareness of Agricultural Water Development
(AWD) needs and potential and help promote strategic planning and investment
preparation in the sub-regions and countries in order to revitalize interest
in AWD investment in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)
Specific purposes of the regional
event :
·
disseminate
findings and recommendations of a new multi-partner AWD strategy,
·
facilitate
country /regional level actions to scale up agricultural water development,
·
promote
the establishment of national irrigation and drainage associations (NIDA)
.
Expected outputs :
·
greater
awareness and visibility of the AWD needs,
·
workshop
proceedings,
·
action
plans for scaling up AWD at regional levels,
·
plans
for the establishment of and capacity strengthening of NIDAs, for promotion
of certifications of irrigation and drainage professionals.
Target countries :Countries having an agricultural strategy under implementation
or be preparing a national AWD strategy or implementation plans. They should
have or intend to set up a national irrigation association and/ or are members
of ICID. The following 25 countries are listed.
- West, Central Africa : Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad,
Ghana, Guinea Conakry, Ivory Coast, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Rep.
Dem. of Congo, Senegal, Togo.
- East, Southern
Africa : Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda,
Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda,
Zambia
Target participants : 70-80 people invited from SSA region. They may include professionals
and representatives from government agencies, prominent local institutions
and academics, private sector, and NGOs. They would come from ministries of
agriculture/water resources or irrigation, representatives of executive bureaus
of ARID, members of national irrigation associations, or other relevant organizations
and institutions, project teams of agricultural, AWD, rural development of
both countries and donor partners. International and regional development
agencies will also be invited.
Preliminary agenda
Monday 26 March 2007 : Presentation of the strategy
and subject discussion on issues relating to scaling up investments in AWD
in the SSA region.
Discussion & debate on needs for
increasing potentials and performance of AWD
Tuesday 27 March 2007 : Focused presentations
on types of irrigated agriculture, cost and profitability of irrigated agriculture,
institutional arrangements, and regional environment.
Wednesday 28 March 2007 : Working
groups on sub-regional visions on AWD.
